Quorum sensing, in plain English refers to the method in which cells communicate to each other through chemical signals in order to perform a collective behavior. While most people assume that bacterium paints a boring life, continuously forming into multiple cells, there is more to its unicellular life. Quorum sensing led me to think about the multiple ways in which human beings communicate in the present day and the evolution of communication. Just as how it takes two to communicate, the same goes for cells. Cells are not so lonely as we perceive them to be. Cells are like human beings. The notion that they communicate with each other to perform a particular activity has a similar characteristic to how human beings behave. Human beings thrive by being in each other’s company, develop relationships, discover about themselves in the process. Below is a play on social networking platform for bacteria if it had a social networking community like human beings in today’s society. What I found intriguing about quorum sensing is that cells cannot be by themselves if they want to perform an activity. This is relatable in various grounds of how human beings interact with each other. Which led me to the thought of how significant relationships are for human beings just as important as it is for cells to have “friends” and “neighbors” in order to function properly. Where the major difference between human beings and cells is that we are complex creatures than the latter. We have emotions, thoughts, opinions and personal identity that distinguish who we are as a person. We thrive and we become who we are through the friendships we make, romantic relationships, the environment we live in, families and through work. By communicating and interacting with others, we discover our identity in the process of our lives. Each encounter, each relationship we create shape our very being.
